Beginner’s Guide to Vaping

Beginner’s Guide to Vaping

November 23, 2017

You’ve done some reading online. You’ve talked to your friends who vape. You’re still smoking, and you’re looking for a better alternative. You’ve decided that vaping is going to be your way forward -- but you’re not sure how to get started. This guide is for you. Our beginner’s guide to vaping will give you a high-level overview of the most important things that you need to know before buying an e-cigarette for the first time. Do you have a question that isn’t answered here? The beginner’s section of our blog is full of information that you’ll find useful. Head over there after you’ve finished reading this guide.

What Is an E-Cigarette?

An e-cigarette uses heat to change a liquid -- usually containing nicotine -- into an aerosol. When you inhale the aerosol, you absorb the nicotine through your mouth, throat and lungs. Since you get nicotine from a tobacco cigarette in the same way, using an e-cigarette feels very much like smoking -- but an e-cigarette does not create smoke. The vapor from an e-cigarette contains no tar and no carbon monoxide.

What E-Cigarette Should I Choose?

The two best types of e-cigarettes for beginners are cigalikes -- which are about the same size and shape as tobacco cigarettes -- and vape pens. Vape pens are around the same size and shape as permanent markers. Most cigalikes:
  • Are extremely simple to use -- just twist on a cartridge and go
  • Have very low starter kit prices but very high refill prices
  • Have few refill flavors available and do not work with other companies’ cartridges
Most vape pens:
  • Are fairly simple to use but require you to fill your own tanks with e-liquid
  • Have slightly higher starter kit prices but very low refill prices because you can buy e-liquid in bulk
  • Work with virtually every e-liquid on the market

Which should you choose? We recommend starting with a simple vape pen. Although learning to fill an e-liquid tank requires a little effort, that effort will pay off with a larger flavor selection and lower long-term ownership costs.

What Does Vaping Feel and Taste Like?

An e-cigarette can have a very convincing tobacco flavor, but it’s important to remember that even the best e-cigarette doesn’t taste exactly like a tobacco cigarette because e-cigarettes produce no smoke. Most people actually find after vaping for some time that they no longer crave the taste of real tobacco. E-cigarettes taste so great that they cause tobacco cigarettes to lose their allure. If you’ve ever tried a nicotine replacement therapy such as gums and patches, you’re going to love the way that e-cigarettes feel in comparison. Since an e-cigarette allows you to absorb nicotine through your lungs, vaping feels essentially the same as smoking. You’ll have no trouble satisfying your nicotine cravings when you vape.

How Do I Use an E-Cigarette?

Charging the E-Cigarette

For this portion of the guide, we’ll assume that you purchased a vape pen rather than a cigalike. You’ll begin by charging the battery and filling the tank. Remove the tank from the battery, and charge the battery with the included USB cable. Some vape pens also include wall outlet adapters.

Filling the E-Cigarette
Most e-cigarette tanks fill from the bottom. To fill the tank, grasp the bottom collar and twist it away from the body of the tank. Drip e-liquid from a bottle into the center chamber of the tank and replace the collar. Wait several minutes before continuing; the tank has a soft wick that needs to soak up some of the e-liquid in the tank.

Using the E-Cigarette
Once the battery is done charging, reconnect the tank. Press the fire button on the battery five times quickly to turn the battery on. While holding the button, puff on the e-cigarette like you would a real cigarette. Release the button after completing a puff.

Replacing the Atomizer Coil
The atomizer coil in an e-cigarette doesn’t last forever. The coil eventually stops working, or residue from e-liquid begins to alter the flavor that the tank produces. To replace the coil in most e-cigarette tanks, twist off the bottom collar as if you were filling the tank. Twist the coil out of the tank’s base and twist in a new coil.
